The Google Nexus One: Google moves into mobile phones

When Google launched its Nexus One mobile phone there were more than a few surprised (but excited) Smartphone fanboys who couldn’t wait to get their hands on the new technology. Not one to disappoint, Google certainly doesn’t with the Nexus One - this phone brings an extra degree of “clever” to the Smartphone, probably much to the chagrin of its competitors.

Creating the Nexus One

The Nexus One is manufactured in Taiwan, a relatively expected move on the part of Google. The company has many ties within Taiwan and the region is fast becoming known for high-quality construction of electronic goods.

The really outstanding feature that sets the Nexus One apart - and caused the most murmurings when Google moved into the mobile phone market - is the Nexus One’s ability to transcribe voice to text – no more thumb repetitive strain injury! The Nexus One uses a software system known as Android, which is modified from the Linux operating system technology.

The other major boon for the company is selling the Nexus One unlocked, which means that its use is not restricted to a certain network provider – a move that definitely won Google a lot of fans.

Google Nexus One availability

The Nexus One first hit stores in the US in January 2010, and to begin with was sold on Google’s own website for about $529 – with no plan included of course, handset only. Google then launched a Vodaphone model within Europe – and this went down well. Most things that Google does in terms of forging corporate partnerships tend to work out fairly favourably.

In February 2010 the phone was updated in terms of software with improvements made to the web browser, photo gallery maps and some other applications – these changes were based on the market test of the Nexus One and some firm market research results.

The Nexus One is, of course, regularly compared to the Apple iPhone, and is arguably superior in terms of network availability and speed – at least until Apple releases an update. After all, the mobile phone market is never stable for long.
